Europe in favour of having Iceland into the Community

After the solidity of the Euro in front of the global financial crisis, the forces pushing to enter the Eurozone increased from both Great Britain and Iceland (traditionally, these countries have always been sceptical on the validity of the European system) .

In Iceland, there are now a lot of people that talk about the entrance of the country into the European Union and the official request could arrive any day now.

On December 11th, 2008, Olli Rehn- the commissioner for the enlargement of the EU, gave the green light for the candidature of Iceland during 2009, and therefore the process of entering the Union might start already in the first half of 2009.

A few weeks ago, during an interview, Mrs. Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir, the Icelandic Ministry of Education and Culture, has reported that entering the EU is the only way that Iceland may follow to live through the economic crisis.

Therefore, her party, the Sj (Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn – the Party of Independence), that has always been against this opening, is going to approve the request to enter into the European Union, even if this will mean accepting the European rules on fishing, that go against the economical interests of Iceland.
