This Island has been inhabited from the Middle Age. On the XI Century, a monastery was build, and throughout the centuries the town has become a more and more important base of trade.
Flatey is a very peculiar village: there are buildings dating back to the 19th Century and beginning of 20th Century (Félagshús- the oldest house of the town, dates back to 1834), when the island was a very important cultural and commercial site.
Nowadays, many building are vacation houses.
Interesting to visit: by the town Church- consecrated in 1926, there’s a library built in 19th Century
