Free camping in Iceland

Posted on March 27, 2009 by

It’s difficult to do free camping: in the national parks and in the nature reserve this is strictly forbidden. In the other areas, a permission is required: this because some areas are subject to sudden earthquakes or volcanic eruptions, some other areas may be damaged by sandstorms or floods. Because of all this, it is mandatory to have the permission of camping released by the competent authorities.

    Dear Cinzia,

I’m going to Iceland next Summer.
Can you tell me what sort of authorities should I contact for the permission? And is the free camping is still allowed?
    Thanks,
    Peter
