This week the best magazines and guides for trips and travelling have listed the top ten places of the world that can’t be missed in 2012.
NatGeo, Lonely Planet, Fodor’s, Michelin, Travel are only a few of the most presitgious journals that particpated to this selection.
… And it should not surprise that among the best destinations there is Iceland, the only European country included in the list.
That’s true: once again, the amazing natural beauties wisely protected, the different colours that make it a paradise for photographers, allowed to this fascinating island to get the attention of the gotha of tourism.
We wish that many of you may enjoy its beauties, always respecting that wonderful environment that Nature has made.

According to the planning, the trip was going to be quite interesting: visit Iceland by bike was a big challenge, however leaving and run trough different countries before arriving, would have given me the chance to know Iceland better. It would have been useful to have the opportunity to really understand the differences among the countries I would have gone through and could have compared them.

So I booked the flight to Iceland from Berlin- so I could have travelled through Italy, Switzerland, Austria and Germany. And for the return, I booked the flight Reykiavik- Frankfurt so to travel through Germany, France and then arrive to my home country again.

The whole trip will be on board of a bike. I have not planned the stages of the journey, as I want to be free to move and stop as I like: I will never sleep in a shelter or a hotel, I’ll cook using a camping stove, in a few words I’ll be completely free! The only contacts I’ll have with civilization will be during the supply of food along the way and in the few villages I’ll go by.

The itinerary will for sure change and be adapted to the mood of the moment and the accidents that may occur, but anyway the draft plan is the following:

The departure from Turin, Italy, is foreseen on 15th Aug 2011; I’ll direct my bike towards the Alps and Switzerland, then I’ll direct to Austria, Munich and again Northward towards Berlin, from where I’ll catch the flight to Iceland.

I’ll start the trip on the island from Keflavik, from where I’ll go Eastward, on the Ring Road anticlockwise. The first challenge will be to enter the Natural Park of Hekla (Stong and Landmannalaugar). I’ll then go down the Road #1 passing by Posmork and Seljalandsfoss. I’ll continue on Road # 1 and I’ll pass by Skogafoss and Dyrholalaey; I’ll then bike among the mountainside of the Vatnajokull. After the icebergs of the Jokulsarlon, I’ll go all the way down to Myvatn, Dettifoss and Husavik, in the North of the country. Godafoss, Akureyri and afterwards I’ll bike all alone on the F35, the rough road that crosses the island from one corner to the other. The Golden Ring and Reykjavik will be the final important steps of the long trip in Iceland.

The trip will not finish at the end of the adventure on the island, as from Frankfurt I’ll go back to Italy biking through France.

My estimation is to run about 4.000km.

In case you wish to go towards the internal area, on off-roads, you need a very good map that clearly details the roads and the morphology of the ground. It useful to have a GPS system that allows you to always understand your position and that may help you to define your journey.

If you consider the environment characteristics of Iceland, clothes must first of all meet the following requirements: comfort and flexibility.

In the first case, we suggest sport clothes that make movements easier. Flexibility instead is important to adapt to the sudden weather changes, that require to dress or undress quickly.

T-shirt and short pants are just perfect for sunny summer days, but if the wind starts blowing and clouds cast a shadow in the sky, it’s better to have something ready to wear, as a warm sweater –best would be if this jumper has a hood to protect your head, long trousers, wind stop jacket.

If the weather worsens, even if it’s summer clothes must keep you very warm. The mountain garments are the best solution, as the can protect you from cold and wind but at the same time allow your skin to breath, they’re also light and fit in any corner of your bag when you don’t need them.

Shoes must also be resistant against thermal range, as it might happen that you have to walk on glaciers and on volcanic grounds the same day. Watch out also about socks: it’s better if they’re in transpiring fabric that dries quickly.
It can also be very useful to have the Nordic walking sticks: there are many kind of these sticks available on the market, in different materials.

Do you want a vacation dedicated to freedom? Visit Iceland by camper van or even better by four wheel car. (4×4) .

It’s not difficult to transport your own car to the island by ferryboat, and you’ll be able to move freely and with everything you need always at your disposal. For this kind of trip, you of course need to get good road maps, a very detailed one, that reports also the oil pimps and drug stores. Moreover you should define in advance the tour you want to do.
Considering that you do not have fixed time schedules, you may quietly enjoy the surroundings, the breathtaking landscapes, and stopping as long as you want or passing by if something does not attract you.
There’s only one recommendation you should follow: always respect the highway code and check daily the weather forecast!

Husavìk is quite famous for the whale watching trips that offer the chance to see, among many others, the blue whale, the biggest mammal of the world. It is interesting to know that the North Sailing company performs trips on the traditional fishing boats in oak wood, built with ecological materials. A silent sailing, with low use of fuel, to respect at the utmost both the animals and the environment.
The North Sailing company has always supported the protection of the environment against the whale hunting, and it even sponsors cultural events in the area of Husavìk and of the Diamond Circle. By North Sailing works also Hvalferðir or “Gentle Giants”, that besides the whale watching proposes also trips for deep sea fishing.
It really seems that he hands on the Story of the Universe, of the Earth, of Man through oral tales, that he sometimes tell ironically, sometimes seriously but always with a wise meaning underneath.

And of course the scenes related to the birth of the Earth could only be shot in Iceland! From the burning lava to the geysers; from the rushing strength of the water of the falls to the steam coming from the underground, the first part of the movie shows the most beautiful places of the island.

Travelling Westwards and going through the Modrudalur, right before entering the Road n. 1, you’ll see as a mirage: the peat farm that is named after this tableland.
The houses have a wooden structure, but they’re externally covered by peat tiles that are 50cm wide, that tile the walls leaving holes only for doors and windows. The roof is also covered by peat
And the impression is that this building has been made by the underground, as there are moss and herbs that cover everything.
The entrance to the main building, that is indeed a bar, is sustained by wooden beams and everywhere there’s water dripping out, because to make the peat compact, the tiles must be wet.
Inside the bar, heat and a good smell of sweets welcome the visitors coming from the desert.
From the window you can notice the gas station standing right in front of the building. To protect the gas and the fuel from the ice, also the tank and the pump have been inserted in a building made of wood and peat!

l New Year’s Eve: it is celebrated on the night of December 31st- Icelanders have dinners, fireworks, parties and dance;

l Christmas: this is a very important event for the Icelanders. Both work and school stop for about a month, also because of the dark and the cold, and every day there’s a celebration and it’s occasion to spend time with family and friends. During these days children live a very special time: besides Santa Claus, there are other characters, such as Yule Lads, that bring presents before and after Christmas day.

January and February

l Þorrablót: this celebration has Viking origins, and it falls between 18th January and 16th February. There are banquets with any kind of Icelandic food, as the hákarl, the putrefied shark.

l Bolludagur: it literally stands for “the bubble day”. This is the first celebration before Lent starts and it falls on Monday before the Carnival. On this day, children are authorized to prod the adults with a stick to get the bollur, i.e. the puffs stuffed with cream or jam.

· Sprengidagur: it’s Shrove Tuesday, and the name literally stands for “day when you burst”. As in many other countries, the day before Lent starts you stuff yourself: the Icelanders do it eating salted mutton and a pea soup.

l Öskudagur: on Ash Wednesday children tie small bags of ashes on the shoulders of the adults and ask them sweets and coins;

l The Beer day: it falls on March 1st and reminds the legalization of beer that occurred in 1989.

There are high schools only in the three main cities of the island: Reykjavík, Akureyri and Egilsstaðir. The lessons and related activities last all day long, therefore, considering the distances from the villages and the weather conditions, students often stay in boarding schools from Monday till Friday.
The young people that wish to continue their studies, subscribe to the universities of Reykjavík or Akureyri, otherwise they move to Denmark or Great Britain.
The school year starts on the last week of August and finishes in May. In December schools are closed for a whole month because of the weather and because of the lack of sunlight. During this month, where also the adults reduce the rhythm of their jobs, Icelanders celebrate Christmas.

If you have only 6 days at your disposal, you could go towards the North. The area of Akureyri, reachable by air from Reykjavik, offers a lot of different things: besides the visit to the city, that is also called the capital of the North, Husavík is for sure worthwhile a trip. From here the boats leave for whale watching tours.

The Myvatn lake is also nearby and offers different kind of attractions: pseudo- craters, lava castles at Dimmuborgir, the intense yellow colour of the solfataras in Namaskard, the balck colour of the lava fields of the Krafla volcan, and the Blue Lagoon of the North

In Iceland, besides the big cities of Reykjavik and Akureyri, the towns are quite small and in some cases they are made of a few houses only. In some regions the density of population is very low and there are only a few isolated farms here and there.

Therefore the Icelandic school has been structured to face the needs of the pupils that from the very beginning of their school careers must face long transfers and stay away from home, and therefore must become independent quickly.

In Iceland the public education is very important and the level of education is quite high. School are usually organized in the main towns of the area, or eventually in a farm that acts as reference to the others of the county.

The pupils get there by school bus in the morning and go back home in the evening. It often happens that classes are composed by students of different ages, where the older ones help and become tutors of the younger pupils. In every village there’s a kindergarten and a primary school, that is mandatory to attend from 6 till 13 y.o.

Although it is an isolated area, it is worthwhile to plan a trip to the Western Fiords in wintertime, to live the winter atmosphere of the sub arctic region. The mountains around Ísafjörður make a shadow on the city from December until January, so much so that it prevents the sunbeams to pass. On Jan. 23rd the inhabitants run to Sólgata- the road of the sun- and celebrate the first short return of the light, around noontime. This celebration is an happening, that allow the inhabitants to meet, exchange opinions, eat sweets and drink coffee, and together welcome the first glimpses of Spring.
In wintertime Ísafjörðurmay be reached only by daily flights from Reykjiavik. Around the city there are skiing facilities, that are usually open from January until April.
