A stay in Flatey

In Flatey, by Krákuvör, there’s a camping and a farm that offer hospitality to tourists. Another house where you can spend a night is Læknishús farm.

Flatey Hotel is located in the town centre.
To reach the Island, you may use the Baldur ferry-boat that sails along the Breiðafjörður bay every day, stopping in Flatey.

Tourists may choose to stay on the island for a few hours only, or a few days; they can even carry their car with them, on the boat.

Mountain shelters in Iceland

The mountain shelters, or sæluhús, are located along the main excursions routes of Iceland. They’re open to everybody; they have big rooms to sleep with the bag, and sometimes they even have a kitchen, showers, drinkable water and small areas for camping. Most of these buildings may be reached only on foot; the shelters Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk with a 4×4 vehicle, while the Hornstrandir by boat.

The reservations must be done in advance calling the local keepers, as the availability is quite limited. The main manager of the refuges is the Ferðafélag Íslands ( www.fi.is ), the Icelandic excursion association, that owns 34 buildings around the island.

These are easy private houses, that offer rooms to tourists, in a similar way to the English B&B; sometimes these houses are organized as small hotels.

Some guesthouses allow the tourists to use the kitchen, and even to use sleeping bag.
This kind of lodging is usually available during summertime only, because, particularly around Reykjavik, these houses are used by students during school time.
The price of lodging includes breakfast.

In Iceland there’s little hotel accommodation, but in every main town there’s at least one hotel with restaurant.
From June until the end of August there’s a higher choice, because many boarding schools become hotel and are managed directly by the local township or by the Edda Hotel chain (read dedicated post).
Every kind of building/chain, apart form the category, has high care for hygiene level and usually the prices include buffet breakfast. Some hotel it is even possible to use your own sleeping bag, instead of the bed linen of the hotel. This allows to save a lot on the cost of the stay. The main Icelandic chain of hotels are Fosshótel and Icelandair Hotels, which include the Edda Hotel.

Holiday houses in Iceland

In the most interesting and attractive areas of Iceland, you may find independent cottages that the Icelanders use on the week ends, as they love to spend time surrounded by the Nature. In summertime, some of the owners rent these houses to tourists for stays not shorter than three nights.

Farm holidays in Iceland

In Iceland many farms offer the possibility to camp on their areas, but also give shelter to sleep with a sleeping bag, or offer bedrooms or bungalow. It is sometimes even possible to eat there or use the kitchen. Sometimes, guests may even use a thermal or geothermal pool.

Boards along the road indicate the farms that offer lodging to tourists, but they are also listed on the travel guide published by Ferðaþjónusta Bænda, the Icelandic association that gathers the farms opened to tourists.

Hostels in Iceland

In Iceland it is easy and sometimes even convenient to find hospitality in hostels, and the prices they offer are very good.

Some hostels have been built quite recently, and are equipped with modern accessories, while some other traditional buildings have been recently restructured. All of them are characterized by a family atmosphere, and by friendly staff that is available to meet any request.

The “Icelandic Hostelling International Hostels” (HI Hostels) is a chain that has 26 hostels around Iceland. HI Hostels grants very tidy, low cost structures.

The rooms they offer have from 2 to 6 beds, equipped with pillow and mattress. Guests may bring their own bed linen, or rent it at the hostel or even choose to use his own sleeping bag. Important: remember to bring the bath linen with you!

Each hostels has a well equipped kitchen, that the guests may use free of charge. A lot of hostels serve breakfast, and some even lunch and dinner, if booked in advance. Guests of the hostels may join the different activities organized both at the hostel itself or nearby; among these, there are rafting, swimming, horse rides, trips to the glaciers, and many other.

To stay at the hostels it’s not mandatory to book ahead of time, but it’s suggested to confirm your reservation in advance by email, fax or snail mail, particularly if you plan a stay during the high season period. For groups and families- reservation is mandatory.

Edda Hótel, the cheap and functional Icelandic hotels

The Edda chain owns a few hotels and manages boarding schools, that during the summer, are used to host tourists.
All the Edda Hotels ( www.hoteledda.is ) have a restaurant, and they’re usually located by a geothermal pool. Rooms are simple but clean. Four of these hotels have the PLUS category, that corresponds to a 3stars: in the room there’s a private bathroom, TV, telephone.

Some other hotels, of lower category, adapt schoolrooms and gyms and offer double rooms, or dormitories.

You may ask to use your sleeping bag instead of using the sheets offered by the hotel: in this way you can save a lot on the price of the stay.

Classification of the Icelandic farm holidays and B&B

In Iceland every farm is unique, but it is possible to distinguish among different categories according to the kind of rooms:
 I Category: simple and comfortable rooms; daily cleaning;
 II Category simple rooms, furnished with wardrobe and basin;
 III Category: rooms with private bathrooms;
 IV category: rooms with private bathrooms, belonging to the Country hotel chain.

Cottages, also furnished with kitchen at disposal of guests, are classified per category, starting from A- the most simples, till D, that marks the cottages furnished with every kind of comfort

Camping areas

In Iceland, in every spot frequented by tourists there are areas equipped for camping. They’re called “Tjaldsvæði” and they’re usually open from June till August. Some camping have a laundry, kitchen, warm showers, restrooms, while some only have cold water and toilets.

Many camping areas offer discounts to people holding the International Camping Card (in Italy, for instance, you can ask for it at the Confederazione Italiana Campeggiatori- www.federcampeggio.it )

The Útilega Tjaldsvæði Íslands guide may be bought in the Icelandic tourist offices; it lists the camping areas of the whole island.
