The characteristic of the Icelandic rivers is the white water. They find their way among lavic rocks and glacial canyons, and they’re perfect for exciting rafting trips.

Rafting tours are organized both in the Southern area, on the Hvítá, Þiórsá, Markarfljót and Hólmsá rivers, and on the Northern one, on the Jökulsá Vestari and Austari rivers.

The local agencies organize both day trips and longer journeys, including guide, equipment, transportation, food and if needed tent or refuge to sleep.

The most famous agencies are Activity Tours, Bakkaflöt and Arctic Rafting and all organize trips of different levels, from the easiest to the most extreme, starting in June until September. You must be at least 12 y.o. to participate and early reservation is suggested.

Activity Tours offers courses with rapids that go from I to IV. There’s the “River Rush” package, that follows the course of the Jökulsá Austari river and goes from the internal desert of Sprengisandur till the coast: this trip will for sure satisfy the lovers of thrill!

Bakkaflöt is a farm that, besides rafting, offers comfortable rooms where to sleep with sleeping bag.
The Arctic Rafting, besides the actual rafting, proposes also some other activities such as walks, climbing on glaciers, trips on kayak or canoe. The canoe course may foresee- for the most adventurous spirits – dives from the rocks, re-climbing of falls and swimming in underwater caves!
