The distribution of seabirds on Icelandic cliffs

Posted on July 11, 2009 by cinzia

In the North of the Atlantic Ocean seabirds make their nests on the cliffs in a very precise way . This happens also in Iceland: in summertime the puffins live on the rock face, where the mould settles; right beneath, on the highest rocks, live the fulmars (fulmarus glacialis) and the trydactyl seagull (rissa tridactyla).

Far down the guillemot (uria aalge) and the sea pie (alca torda) make their nests. The rock closer to the water are the kingdom of the sea crow (phalacrocorax aristotelis), while on the surface of the water live the great black-backed gull (larus marinus) and the black guillemot (cepphus grylle).
