The population of Reykjavík and the economy

Reykjavík and the 6 neighbouring townships compose the “greater Reykjavík”. 3 out of 5 Icelanders live in this area. Besides being the political and administrative centre of Iceland, Reykjavík is the heart of business, communications, social, educational and cultural services.

The majority of its inhabitants is employed in the service industry (trade and services), but there are also a lot of other industries, such as food packaging ones.

Besides its name, Reykjavík is a city with no heating pollution as its houses are heated by the geothermal power, that is clean and safe for the environment.

The capital is also one of the most important harbours of the Country, both for trade and fishery.
