Offshore Keflavik, there’s Karl and Eldey. Karl, “the old man”, is a 52 m high rock column, where you can do whales watching. Eldey, the fire island, is 8 miles away from the coast and it was formed out of the eruption of a submerged Vulcan. It is 77m. high and it hosts one the biggest Gannet colony in the world. The Gannets are big sea birds, with white plumage and black edged wings; they belong to the Sula family. From 1940, this has been a protected area, and access is forbidden.
