The Öræfajökull is a Glacier produced by the Vatnajökull, located on its South- Eastern part. The Öræfajökull owns different primacies: beneath 300mt of ice, it hides the Hvannadalshnúkur, the highest mountain of the island, that is 2119mt high and covers the Öræfi volcano with its perennial ice.

This is the biggest active volcano of the island of the post- glacial age, its crater is 12sqkm wide and it’s also the largest of Iceland. The Öræfi erupted only twice during its life: in 1362 and in 1727. the Mountain guides of Iceland organize trips to the Öræfajökull glacier and in the areas nearby.
