Twelve days tour in Iceland

12 days is the ideal time to visit Iceland quietly, as you may visit different spots and enjoy a lot of attractions. Following Road # 1, you may start from the area of the Western Fjords, a real heaven for birdlife, then go to Saudakrokur, the Myvatn lake, Husavik, Egilsstadir, Hofn and Vik, Heimaey, Reykjavik. Going through the region of crops and of the Western green houses, you’ll pass by the Hraunfossar and the Barnarfossar fall.

Afterwards, when you leave highway # 1, the road goes by the astonishing landscape of the Western Fiords, where different species of arctic birds make their nests. Leaving the Fiords, we get to the Glambaer, a farm made of peat, and then to Akureyri and the Myvatn lake, that hosts different kind of fauna species, and where there’s thermal water (nearby there’s the Blue Lagoon of the north). This is also a good place where to start the visit to the great Krafla volcanic area, where there are of course craters, impressive solfataras, lavic concretions.

Next stopping place – Husavik, offers the opportunity to join whale watching trips, and also to reach the Jökulsargljufur National park, that include the Dettifoss cascade- located a bit northern (this area is the so-called Diamond Circle).

Going towards Egilsstadir, we suggest to pass by the Modrudalur area, that offers a moon like landscapes swept away by strong winds. Between Egilsstadir and Höfn there are the Eastern Fiords: you may found very interesting the visit to the house- museum of Petra Sveinsdottir, a collector , fond of stones. After Höfn, you go closer to the Vatnajokull Glacier. At first, you see the glacial lagoon, afterwards the Skaftafell National park, at the slopes of the glacier.

Moving on towards Vik, the Road #1 goes through the Skeidararsandur. The coast by Vik deserves a stop: the beautiful Reynishverfi black beach, with the rocky arch of Dyrholaey will attract your attention. Before going up the golden ring, going through the falls of Skogafoss and Seljalandfoss, if the weather is nice it, it might be interesting to have a trip on the ferry boat to the Vestmannayaer, and stop at Heimaey to sleep, while a deviation towards Landmannalaugar will give you a precise ideaof the wild heart of the island.

On the last two days must for sure be dedicated to the Golden Circle (the Þingvellir plain, the Gullfoss cascade, the Geyser area) and the modern and inviting Reykjavik.
